Radio LaB Shortlisted For Awards

SRAawardsTwo graduates from the University of Bedfordshire’s radio station Radio LaB have been shortlisted for this year’s Student Radio Awards.

Media Production graduate Luke Gregory has been nominated for the Best Male category, while Media Performance graduate Kyle Bennett is in the running for the Best Interview prize.

“When I was told that I had been nominated, I couldn’t believe it. I cheered and ran downstairs to tell my parents. I have had so many messages from people congratulating me and I’m just so happy to be nominated,” said Luke, who is now a presenter on KMFM Radio in Kent.

“I’m really excited for the awards ceremony now, knowing that I can turn up and just enjoy the night. I also have a 50/50 chance of winning so who knows!”

Luke was also keen to stress to other Radio LaB students the importance of entering awards like these: “If you are a radio student then I can’t stress how important these awards are, this could be you in a years time, if you really want a career in radio and you’re not entering the awards then you’re just wasting your time! Work hard, listen to radio and most importantly be yourself!!”

“To be in with a chance of winning a national award is absolutely crazy and I still can’t believe it,” said Kyle, who was shortlisted as a result of his interview with a detective constable from the London Metropolitan Police about the relationship between young black people and the police in London.

“When I recorded this interview for my special project, I never thought it would lead to this. Whether I win or not, the fact that I’ve been shortlisted is a major achievement for both myself and the University. I want to thank everyone who has helped push and support me throughout my education.”

Kyle also took time to recognise the part played by DC Johnson, the interviewee: “This interview opened up my eyes to the difficult role that the Police play in our community that I never quite understood beforehand. I can’t thank DC Johnson enough for the opportunity.”

During their time studying at Bedfordshire, both graduates presented shows on Radio LaB which broadcasts throughout Luton and Bedfordshire from the University’s Luton campus.

Radio LaB Coordinator Terry Lee said: “Having two nominations for the Student Radio Awards this year is unprecedented for Radio LaB. It shows great progress and is a real achievement. Kyle and Luke deserve this recognition in response to their drive and talent as broadcasters.

“Radio LaB offers a platform for students to improve and show off their skills – national acknowledgement is icing on the cake.”

Luke and Kyle will find out if they have won at an awards ceremony in London on Thursday 10th November.
