Radio LaB nominated in the ‘ILSR’ Awards 2017

Radio LaB are pleased to announce that we’ve been shortlisted twice in the ‘Best Outreach’ category in the ‘I Love Student Radio’ Awards 2017. Our ‘Drug Driving’ campaign and our mini-series ‘The Vesper House Lunch Club’ were recognised as good examples of our community work.

The awards ceremony takes place on 20th April in Leicester (at Demon FM in Leicester).

Terry Lee is the Radio LaB Coordinator:

“We are proud to have worked alongside Age Concern Luton, Luton Borough Council & Smart Safe Luton as part of our radio output this year. Our students learnt so much from these community projects – and the feedback from those organisations was fantastic as well. Radio LaB will continue to be a creative platform for students to work with positive & charitable external organisations, I would encourage anyone who thinks we may be able to help to contact us.“

Vesper House Lunch Club

Radio LaB has been working with Age Concern Luton to create a 4 episode mini-series called ‘The Vesper House Lunch Club’.

Three Radio LaB student managers – Kayleigh Saunders, Matt Udall and Steve Wells – visited Age Concern’s thrice-weekly lunch club, where Luton pensioners are offered transport, food and fun.

The students asked all the service users and volunteers to pick a song that envoked memories, and recorded the conversations for radio.

4 hour long programmes will be broadcast on Sundays at 8am, starting on 5th February.

Claire Hussey – Wellbeing Officer – Age Concern Luton:
“The Service Users loved having Radio LaB at the lunch club, they loved talking about the music that meant so much to them – their memories are special to them and they love to share. We hope Radio LaB and the students come back again to do another project.”

Radio LaB student manager Kayleigh Saunders:
“I thoroughly enjoyed each day I spent at the Vesper House lunch club. It has made me consider volunteering at the club or a similar club at some point in the future as it’s great company and I really enjoyed talking with the older people and volunteers there.”

20161019_104645Radio LaB Coordinator Terry Lee:
“This radio project was about giving some of our town’s oldest voices a chance to share their stories, and introduce their favourite tunes. I’m proud of how Kayleigh, Matt and Steve spoke to the Age Concern service users with compassion and respect. Many of these users spend a lot of time alone – it was clear they enjoyed the conversations with our students.

“At Radio LaB we are always looking to work with organisations like Age Concern Luton, and hope to be involved in more community engagement projects in the near future.”

Drug-driving prevention

Radio-LaB-drug-drive-ad-webThe University of Bedfordshire’s community radio station Radio LaB has teamed up with Luton Council and Smart Safe to support a campaign to discourage people from drug-driving.

Radio LaB produced a radio advert supporting the campaign. Listen to the audio

The advert was produced and voiced by Radio LaB student managers Kayleigh Saunders, Matthew Udall and Steven Wells.

Sports Journalism student Matthew said: “Unfortunately you cannot escape the fact that drug driving is a thing. And it could be our friends and family that become the next innocent victim. That is why it was a great pleasure working with Luton Council to hopefully make a difference. “

Media Production student Kayleigh said: “I really enjoyed the experience I gained from working with Smart Safe and Luton Council on this project. Having helped to make this advert, it has also opened my mind to different career options too after I graduate. I am now considering voice over work which I hadn’t before.”

Music Technology student Steve said: “I’m honoured to be a part of this campaign as I believe there isn’t enough public awareness about drug driving. Drugs can have as much impact on your ability to drive as alcohol and if the adverts save even one life, then that is a huge achievement.”

Radio LaB Coordinator Terry Lee said: “As a Community Radio station, Radio LaB is always proud to support local authorities and support services in getting their message out to young people and students in Luton. I’m so pleased with how our students have conducted themselves with this project. It’s been a fantastic opportunity for them to work on creating a serious, important message.”

Radio LaB Shortlisted For Awards

SRAawardsTwo graduates from the University of Bedfordshire’s radio station Radio LaB have been shortlisted for this year’s Student Radio Awards.

Media Production graduate Luke Gregory has been nominated for the Best Male category, while Media Performance graduate Kyle Bennett is in the running for the Best Interview prize.

“When I was told that I had been nominated, I couldn’t believe it. I cheered and ran downstairs to tell my parents. I have had so many messages from people congratulating me and I’m just so happy to be nominated,” said Luke, who is now a presenter on KMFM Radio in Kent.

“I’m really excited for the awards ceremony now, knowing that I can turn up and just enjoy the night. I also have a 50/50 chance of winning so who knows!”

Luke was also keen to stress to other Radio LaB students the importance of entering awards like these: “If you are a radio student then I can’t stress how important these awards are, this could be you in a years time, if you really want a career in radio and you’re not entering the awards then you’re just wasting your time! Work hard, listen to radio and most importantly be yourself!!”

“To be in with a chance of winning a national award is absolutely crazy and I still can’t believe it,” said Kyle, who was shortlisted as a result of his interview with a detective constable from the London Metropolitan Police about the relationship between young black people and the police in London.

“When I recorded this interview for my special project, I never thought it would lead to this. Whether I win or not, the fact that I’ve been shortlisted is a major achievement for both myself and the University. I want to thank everyone who has helped push and support me throughout my education.”

Kyle also took time to recognise the part played by DC Johnson, the interviewee: “This interview opened up my eyes to the difficult role that the Police play in our community that I never quite understood beforehand. I can’t thank DC Johnson enough for the opportunity.”

During their time studying at Bedfordshire, both graduates presented shows on Radio LaB which broadcasts throughout Luton and Bedfordshire from the University’s Luton campus.

Radio LaB Coordinator Terry Lee said: “Having two nominations for the Student Radio Awards this year is unprecedented for Radio LaB. It shows great progress and is a real achievement. Kyle and Luke deserve this recognition in response to their drive and talent as broadcasters.

“Radio LaB offers a platform for students to improve and show off their skills – national acknowledgement is icing on the cake.”

Luke and Kyle will find out if they have won at an awards ceremony in London on Thursday 10th November.

Rock-Bottom-Radio-team-webRadio LaB is aiming to raise hundreds of pounds for charity as a tribute to a young wrestler.

Rock Bottom Radio (RBR), our wrestling-based panel discussion show, has aired every Wednesday at 8pm for two years, during which time the team discuss in-depth on matters of WWE and other wrestling franchises.

Now the team are planning a special 24 hour broadcast on Tuesday 25th October from 10pm called #RBR24, to raise money for charity Cavendish Cancer Care.

The team wanted to pay tribute to UK wrestler Kris Travis, who passed away earlier this year at the age of just 32, following a battle with stomach cancer.

RBR presenter and Journalism student Daniel Jones said: “Kris’ death really touched the team and we all felt we wanted to support the charity that supported him, Cavendish Cancer Care. #RBR24 is going to be a lot of fun – we can’t wait.”

Radio LaB Co-ordinator Terry Lee said: “Rock Bottom Radio’s successes over the past two years are set to be seriously celebrated in this unique 24 hour broadcast. #RBR24 is a student-led programme, and one which demonstrates Radio LaB’s commitment to innovative radio content.”
