Radio LaB wins Big Bronzes’ at Community Radio Awards

The University of Bedfordshire, student and community radio station, Radio LaB 97.1fm won two bronze awards at the Community Radio Awards, on 16th November during a ceremony held in Cardiff.

The two awards were won for two incredibly different projects demonstrating the variety of content the station produces.

The first award win came for the stations coverage of Radio 1’s Big Weekend when it came to Luton. Where they won in the best event or outside broadcast category. 6 student volunteers of the station got the chance to go backstage the festivals introducing stage for up and coming artists. The Team spoke to some great artists and even spoke to Greg James!

Danielle Foley, Radio LaB volunteer and Radio & Audio student described the award wins: ‘“The work experience at Big Weekend was such an incredible chance to get hands-on experience of the fast-paced radio world in a festival environment. It’s opened so many doors for me and I’m forever grateful. The awards experience this year has been a big motivation for us, too.”

The other bronze award was awarded for the Ampthill Past Memories Project produced in collaboration with Ampthill district preservation society. Which won in the community show of the year category.

Terry Lee, Senior tutor in Radio and coordinator of Radio LaB added:  “A massive congratulations to all involved in the successful award entries this year. Radio LaB is student-led, on-air 24 hours a day, and responsible for a wide range of programming. It’s an achievement to train volunteers, work with partners and broadcast throughout the year – let alone being recognised for creating some of the best audio content in the country.”

The station aims to continue to work hard with the aim of creating more great content and hopefully receiving further national recognition.
